A distal segmental open femur fracture was treated with a retrograde nail. This allowed the use of existing wounds without further stripping of the soft tissues. Mobilization of the patient was rapid, and healing occurred quickly. The risk of extension of any infection to the knee joint was appreciated prior to choosing this treatment plan.
