Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of techniques do you do? Do I have to keep coming back forever? Can I see just one type of provider (chiropractor, massage therapist, shiatsu practitioner)? Whom should I contact with questions about insurance? Can your office order X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other tests? Do you have x-ray equipment in your office? Do you require x-rays before treatment? Do you treat patients on the first visit? Do I have to bring my spouse or family to a "spinal care class"? Can you treat pregnant patients? I have had back surgery in the past. Can I be treated in your office? Are all your staff licensed and/or certified?
What kind of techniques do you do? We're often asked this by patients who have seen other chiropractors. We do not practice a single technique or procedure on every patient, whether it's a chiropractic, massage therapy, or shiatsu technique. As always, treatment is designed on an individual basis. Among the techniques our chiropractic staff performs is traditional manipulation, non-force techniques, Cox distraction, trigger-point therapy, and non-thrust techniques. Our massage therapists are trained in deep muscle therapy, Pfrimmer, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, Swedish, sports massage, reflexology, Russian therapy, and a variety of other techniques.
Do I have to keep coming back forever? NO. Our office does not require patients to keep coming back forever. It has always been our goal, and our reputation, to get patients better as quickly as possible. We do not require patients to sign contracts, agree to long-term care, or pay up front for multiple visits. We work to get you better in the fewest visits, not the most visits.
Can I see just one type of provider? Absolutely. Unlike many multi-provider practices, you are not required at our office to be treated by any one type of provider just to see another type of provider. In other words, if you just want to see the massage therapist, or shiatsu practitioner, that's fine. Dr. Garzillo is our clinic director, and many of the other providers consult Dr. Garzillo in the treatment of patients, but no patient is required to receive actual treatment by Dr. Garzillo or by any other provider in our office.

If I need x-rays, an MRI, or a CAT (CT) scan, can your office order those type of tests? Yes. Our staff have prescriptive privileges at local centers for those types of tests and studies. Some insurance companies, however, (HMO's usually), will cover only those studies ordered by your assigned primary care physician. There are some exceptions (including some HMO's that permit specialists to write referrals for MRIs), so please contact us if you have any questions about referrals for x-rays, MRI's, and the like.
Do you have x-ray equipment in your office? We do not. Our facility once had an x-ray machine, but soon after Dr. Garzillo joined the staff in 1993, the staff decided to remove the x-ray machine and convert the x-ray room into a massage therapy room as part of our Center's conversion to a multi-specialty practice. We now send patients that need x-rays or other studies to local centers in the King of Prussia area, including centers run by the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University hospitals. It is the philosophy of our office that these centers are better qualified to take and read these types of studies than our staff.
Do you require x-rays before treatment? Every patient is different, but in most cases x-rays are not required before initiating treatment. This is the stated policy and opinion of the American Chiropractic Association, the American College of Radiology, the North American Spine Society (the largest professional association of medical and surgical spine specialists) and the federal government's task force on the treatment of spinal pain. Until recently, x-rays were considered to be necessary before treating patients with spinal pain. This is no longer considered to be true. For example, until a few years ago, Medicare required chiropractors to take x-rays before treating Medicare patients. That requirement was recognized as being out-dated and was dropped in 1999. This change in philosophy about x-rays by all healthcare professions, including medicine and chiropractic, is a tremendous step forward in the reduction of uneccesary radiation and medical costs, and we support these changes. If we feel that x-rays are required for your care, we will discuss that with you, and make the appropriate referral to a qualified local radiology center.
Do you treat patients on the first visit? Absolutely. We strive to resolve patient's pain as quickly as possible. Sometimes a patient's pain is eliminated on that first visit.
Do I have to bring my spouse to a "spinal care class"? No. We do not have "spinal care classes." We do not require you to bring a spouse to our office, nor do we require you to refer any family members to our office. We also do not require you to attend any kind of sales-pitch classes. You're coming to our office to get better, not get marketed. We welcome referrals to our office, but we'd like to think that we earn our referrals by providing quality care, not by demanding that you give us your friends' and family's names and phone numbers.
Can you treat pregnant patients? Yes. There are some treatments in our office that cannot be done on pregnant patients, but many that can be. We also have special equipment and tables to handle pregnant patients, and have extensive experience in treating patients in every trimester of pregnancy.
I have had back surgery in the past. Can I be treated in your office? Yes. Much like pregnant patients, there are treatments that can be done on patients who have had surgery, and treatments that can't. By understanding what can and can't be done on patients who have had surgery, we have safely treatment many patients after they have had surgery.
Sometimes, and sometimes not. If you have an infant who is having any kind of symptoms, we urge you to have them evaluated by their pediatrician or family physician first. We would be happy to provide care on infants, but we feel that it is in the best interest of the child that they be "checked out" by their medical physician first.
Are all of your staff licensed and/or certified? Yes. In Pennsylvania, there are licenses for chiropractors, and all of our chiropractors are licensed. There is as yet no licensure in Pennsylvania for massage therapists or shiatsu therapists, but there is a national certification for massage therapists, and all of our massage therapists are nationally certified. On an interesting note, the massage therapist who chairs the American Massage Therapy Association's committee on government relations for creating licensure in Pennsylvania is the director of massage therapy at our office, Scott Dugan MT. When licensure for massage therapy is finally passed in Pennsylvania (which we support), our staff will most likely be among the first licensed massage therapists in Pennsylvania.

While we most likely take your insurance, your insurance may not cover all services in our office, most notably the shiatsu therapy. We will be happy to let you know what services are and are not covered by your insurance plan. |
