Bonaire

Bonaire is one of the premier diving destinations in the Caribbean. Located about 35 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Bonaire sits below the hurricane belt and enjoys the cooling breezes of the westerly trade winds. This constant 15 mile an hour wind keeps the island comfortable, the bugs away, and the east shore (where the best diving is) consistently calm. The Bonaire reefs are in excellent shape due to the fact that they created a National Marine Park over 30 years ago. This prohibits anchors within the park, restricts the dive sites to one boat per site, and sometimes closes certain sites to relieve the stress on that site. The results are obvious.

Bonaire caters mostly to divers and snorkelers. As a result, it is not wall-to-wall discos and condos. It is very laid back and very friendly. Accomodations include hotels, condos, and rental homes. We find the condos work best and that is where we always stay. There are some excellent restaurants on the island. Diving is centered on the east coast of Bonaire and off the island of Klein Bonaire, about a mile off the East coast. It offers some of the best (easiest) beach diving in the world. There is some great macro diving on the town pier, but if you look close elsewhere you can find seahorses, frog fish, and nudibranch. Octopus and dolphin are not unusual. As a matter of fact, I have encountered dolphins underwater in Bonaire more times than anywhere else I have been.

On our March trip, we will be staying at the Divi Flamingo Resort. Our trip will include airfare, 12 boat dives, unlimited beach diving, accommodations, breakfast, and a rental car. Our annual family trip to Bonaire is in August. (You can come even if you don't have a family, or they don't want to come with you). This year we will be staying at Buddy Dive Resort and diving with them. Our accommodations are condos with two bedrooms, two baths, and a living room, dining room, and a kitchen. And with each two bedroom condo we get a rental vehicle. It is a double cab pick up truck which makes beach diving a breeze. The dive package includes eight boat dives and unlimited beach diving. There is also free nitrox. Finally, there is a $75 food voucher for use at the beach bar. (It is 50% off up to $150.) August is family month in Bonaire and it is a perfect time and place to take your family. They have children's programs and it may be possible for your kids to stay for free. Call me for details.

* Indicates Approximate price. It is important to remember that all prices are based on double occupancy and on current airfares. Unfortunately airfares can change up until we actually purchase the tickets. (Then, of course, the airlines charge a penalty for any changes, if they allow changes). This is usually not a problem, but it can happen. Also please note that if you are signing up alone, we will try to line up a roommate for you, however, if we cannot there will be an additional charge for a single supplement. Again, this is not something under our control and we must pass this charge along.
