Postoperative Treatment

The patient was allowed out of bed non-weight bearing on the day after surgery. Early exercises and range of motion was encouraged. Weight-bearing was delayed until bridging callus was seen at the osteotomy site, at approximately 5 weeks Figure 8. She was progressed to full weight bearing at 30 lbs per week.

Femoral neck healing was evident by 3 months and she returned to full activities including aerobics and bicycling by 6 months. Radiographs at one year showed healing of the neck fracture and of the osteotomy Figure 9, but a somewhat concerning sclerosis of the femoral head Figure 10. Functionally she continued to do well. Two year follow-up revealed no progression of the AVN.
