Travel

Well, no one is denying that it has been a strange travel year, but it is time to move on. We have done quite a bit of travel over the past 6 months and it is not nearly as bad as the press makes it up to be. We have found check-in to be relatively easy and security to be refreshingly efficient. Unfortunately, with the thousands upon thousands of flights on the move in this country, the press can always find something to pick on. The truth is that air travel has never been safer and if you have not flown since September 11, you will be glad you finally did it. So look at the trips below and send us your deposit.

Weekend in the Bahamas
If you desperately need to get away, here is the perfect chance. Four days in Nassau. Two days of diving with Stuart Cove. And Bob Miracle to entertain you along the way. And it is only $695. I didn’t think that we would see that price again. It hasn’t been $695 in several years. This is a fun trip. We are staying at South Ocean Beach and the dive shop is right there. We are not holding any spots so you need to let us know right away so we can get you an airline seat. That flight will sell out.

Bonaire - April 27 - May 5
We already have 15 people going to Bonaire on this trip with us. Although we are not holding any spaces, it may still be possible to get some space for you. If you are interested, give us a call, or consider our August Bonaire trip (see below).

Sea of Cortez - June 22 - 29 -- Now $200 less
I love the Sea of Cortez !! There is nowhere you can go and interact with the Sea Lions like the Sea of Cortez. They are the friendliest, most curious sea lions that I have ever encountered. It is one of the ten best dives you will ever make. And I’ll throw in a dive with the manta rays as well. When we were there last year, we dove a new sight where several mantas hang around most of the day. It is a great dive as well. We are looking for about 8 to 10 people to join us on this adventure. It is coming up soon, so you have to act quickly. The trip was $1795 but we managed to get some better airfare prices and have reduced the cost by $200. Let us know immediately if you can join us.

Bonaire - August 17 - 24
It is family month in Bonaire and we are heading back. We will be staying at Lion’s Dive this year. It is right on the beach with good diving right off the dock. To get your heart racing, try a night dive right off the dock. There are a couple of big tarpon that will trail along behind you while you are diving. The flash of silver as your light hits them will get your attention. We stay in condos with a full living room, dining room and kitchen. It is a great way to do a trip. Diving includes 6 boat dives and unlimited beach diving. Kids 12 and under can stay free in your condo with 4 paying people. Call and ask me for details. The trip includes air, condos, diving, and rental cars. We already have 17 spots sold. Don’t delay in making your reservation. The price of the trip is $1395. This is the same price we charged 3 years ago and without the car.

Cozumel -- October 12 - 19
Our infamous Cozumel trip is scheduled again for October, 2002. And it is a pretty good deal to boot. We will once again be staying at the Reef Club with all meals, drinks, accommodations, and 5 days of diving included. Airfare is included as well. And the cost is only $1450 !! Now is you would like to save another $55, get us your $300 deposit not later then May 1 and the trip will cost only $1395. After that, I am afraid that we will have to charge the extra. Also, we have to give up any seats we are holding after August 1. So don’t plan on waiting until the last minute. I am afraid that you will be disappointed.

Saba - Thanksgiving Week
We are presently looking into diving Saba, November 23 - 30. Saba is a tiny Dutch Antilles island about 35 miles from St Maarten. It has some really good and unique diving. The island itself is very unique. It is about 5 miles by 5 miles and over 3000 feet high. It j ust sticks straight up out of the Caribbean. It is real laid back - like the Caribbean was 50 years ago. The diving offers some pinnacles and seamounts that you don’t often see in the Caribbean. I will post the price on the web site as soon as I have it.

Travel Notes
It is important to remember that all prices are based on double occupancy and on current airfares. Unfortunately airfares can change up until we actually purchase the tickets. (Then, of course, the airlines charge a penalty for any changes, if they allow changes). This is usually not a problem, but it can happen. Remember that on most trips you can supply your own airfare. Many people today think that they can find cheaper airfares on the web, and that works fine for us. (See the following article). Also please note that if you are signing up alone, we will try to line up a roommate for you, however, if we cannot there will be an additional charge for a single supplement. Again, this is not something under our control and we must pass this charge along. We also recommend trip cancellation insurance. If you do need to cancel the trip, there may be penalties that are not under our control.

Courses

Scuba Diver
We regularly have Scuba Diver courses starting throughout the area. Even if you have a friend who does not live in the neighborhood, remember that we teach courses from Quakertown to Newtown, from Abington to Doylestown. Why send them somewhere else when you know the quality of instruction that they will receive from Underwater World. Give us a call or check the web site at www.diveunderwaterworld.com.

Advanced Openwater
If you have just completed your Scuba Diver course, have been away from diving for a while, or just want to hone your skills, then you should take the Advanced Scuba Diver Course. This course is one weekend, six dives. We will work on navigation, advanced buoyancy control, and night diving, as well as air consumption and a few other things, as time permits. Every diver should take this course. It is $120 and some of the dates are listed below. Check the web site for additional dates.

Rescue Diver -- June 8 & 9
This is another course that every diver should take. It is much more than teaching you how to rescue other divers. Diving is a really safe sport because we are very safety conscious. The trick is not to just be ready to react to a crisis, but to stop the crisis from occurring. We will teach you to recognize dangerous situations and how to manage them. We will teach you self-rescue and finally we will teach you how to rescue your buddy or another diver. You will want to have First Aid/CPR (see below). Also if you want an Advanced Rescue Diver card, you will need O2 Provider (also see below). You will be thrilled with this course. The fee is $175.

Master Diver Course -- June 3rd
This is the premier course for diving knowledge. With 6 - 7 class sessions and 5 days of diving, you will complete this course and feel really knowledgeable about diving. We will even take a trip to the recompression chamber at the University of Pennsylvania. The cost of this course is $195 and is one of the courses that you need to take on your way to becoming a Divemaster (or as an end in itself). The course will start on June 3rd, so sign up now.

SPECIALITY COURSES

First Aid / CPR
Not just because it is a prerequisite for Dive Rescue certification, this course should be taken by everyone, whether a diver or not. It is two nights long and may save the life of a loved one someday. You never want to be in a position where you wish you had taken it . Sign up now. Only $75.00. Starts January 21st.

Equipment Specialist
This is a great course to take over the winter when you can’t drag your sorry butt out there to dive in that cold water. (Of course, if you took our dry suit course below....). This course is three nights long and will teach you how to make field repairs to some of your equipment. You will have a better idea how things work and will feel more comfortable with you equipment. The cost is only $95.00. Starts January 14th.

Dry Suit
This is a great way to extend your diving season or just make yourself more comfortable any time of year. We will spend a night in the classroom, a night in the pool, and then go diving. the cost of the course is $125.00 and we will credit that towards the purchase of a drysuit if you purchase one within 60 days. That makes it a free course. We will be starting the next one on December 3rd.

Nitrox
Looking for more bottom time. Nitrox will change the way you look at no decompression limits. You will find that in some cases you can double those limits. Many people believe that nitrox is used for deep diving, but the truth is that it is used to extend diving at tbe depts that we normally dive, 70 -120 feet. We run the course about every 6 weeks. Check our web site or give us a call for starting dates. $75.00.

Underwater Photography
Share the excitement. Take great pictures to decorate your home or office or show your friends. We will be looking at digital photography as well as film photography. And we can also offer you the opportunity to dive with the sharks at the New Jersey State Aquarium. Call for details. Course starts February 17. Only $125.00

Buddy Teams

Well, it looks like our wandering spirit is off again. Al will be leaving us shortly to return to Paupa New Guinea, this time to live and work for a while. He will be on the small island of Kaveing working as a divemaster (living in a hut and eating tourists - it is Paupa New Guinea after all). He figures on being there until December, but there is an office pool going with dates varying between 3 months and forever. We shall see. And then Caitlin has been accepted to a program where she will spend 6 weeks in Australia and Fiji counting fish. (When I was in college I couldn’t even get to Ft Lauderdale for Spring Break.) I did see tears in her father’s eyes. I am not sure if it was because he was going to miss her or he figured out what it was costing. I know we are going to miss her.

Rebates & Cash Back

Well, the dive industry is getting a bit more aggressive with their marketing and it is to your benefit. It started with Aqualung’s Buddy Program, designed to give you $75 back. If you come in with your dive buddy and you both buy Aqualung equipment totaling $500 between the two of you, we can give you an instant $75 rebate. Not a bad deal. And that is on top of the deal that we will give you. Now Scubapro is getting into the act with up to $70 back on the purchase of a single regulator (just in case you can’t get your buddy to make a decision). To top it all off, we can give you six months same as cash. Buy it now and don’t pay for it until the end of the dive season. How much easier can we make it for you. Come on in and let our expert staff put you into the proper equipment

Psst... Want a deal...

Every so often we find proof that the local dive center is going to continue to ba a part of the “new economy”. Just recently it was announced that Performance Diver, the largest mail order dive equipment company would cease to exist. That means that they will no longer be around to service all the Performance regulators and Performance bcs that they have sold. So.. people will say, we will bring it to the local dive center for servicing. The problem is that we do not have parts or manuals for this equipment. And because we were not trained on it, specifically, we are not insured to work on it. If you want a graphic example of why to buy from your local dive center, there it is. Even if the local dive center went out of business, at least if you purchased name-brand equipment, you could get it serviced at another dive center. But in the case of a private label brand like Performance, when they go out of business, you are left with a scuba paperweight.
