Post-operative Care

The limb was elevated in a bulky compressive dressing. The patient was discharged after 48 hours. The sutures were removed at two weeks. Three weeks post-op the swelling had diminished to a point where motion could be started. The patient was maintained in a brace and begun in physical therapy for range of motion exercises.

Three months post-op the patient had a painless normal range of ankle and subtalar motion. Radiographs (Figure 7) demonstrated healing. Weight bearing as tolerated and progressive resistance exercises. A near normal gait was achieved by 4 months post-op.

The patient complained of occasional pain after long periods of walking but had relief of 95% of her pre-op pain. The plate was palpable but only minimally bothersome. She has returned to full function.
