MAY IS THE MONTH TO CHECK YOUR DECK!
April 26, 2007, Meridian, Idaho -- Hanging out on your deck can turn any occasion into a lasting memory for your friends and family. Decks host countless events, from a dinner party for a dozen to spontaneous sunset-watching for one. Keeping your deck in great shape is a priority – not only for safety’s sake, but also to protect your investment and make sure that you continue to make great memories for a long time. That’s why in 2006, The North American Deck & Railing Association (NADRA) declared May as Deck Safety Month. May of 2007 marks the second year of this public safety program and the promotion of a new 10-point checklist to help homeowners evaluate the safety and condition of their decks. According to Mike Beaudry, Executive Vice-President of NADRA. “A simple, annual inspection doesn’t take long or require special tools, but it’s a great investment of your time. It can help prevent unnecessary accidents, and keep your deck a safe place for everyone to enjoy.” “May is a great time to make your deck-check,” Beaudry continues. “In parts of the country where there’s a lot of snow and ice, your deck could have developed a trouble spot over the winter.” Beaudry adds “If you’ve never had your deck professionally inspected, by all means, make that appointment. A professional inspection will examine every inch of your deck, educate you on your deck’s capacity limits, identify any problem areas, and give you a map of what to keep your eye on in the future. If your deck is older, this might include a regular deck inspection schedule.” For more information on deck safety and to download a copy of NADRA’s Consumer Checklist, click here.
